New things I’ve done:
- Organised my media collection somewhat
- Backed up my media and notes via Hetzner + rsync
- Started doing password management via Bitwarden (I did not know it was free!)
- Traded in my kit lens and got a new lens for my camera (24mm = 38mm equivalent focal length). It’s hard to use! It captures entire scenes and feels more ‘artistic’ than my 50mm (equivalent 75mm). The 50mm makes it easy to take photos of specific things, and I am very thing-brained.
Hengoed Viaduct, shot with the 24mm lens
- Upgraded the RAM in my laptop - added a stick of 16GB to the 4GB already soldered in. They are not paired so there’s no speedup but it’s sufficient to keep my applications safe from the OOM killer (mostly Darktable when exporting photos).
- While I was at it, I did a lot of dusting inside my laptop case. The fan whirs less now and the speakers sound better. It always feels great to get around to something you should’ve done a year or two ago…
- Tried out Thumbkey for typing on Android. The design is great. Prediction quality has been going down on Gboard’s swipe input… the only thing keeping me is that Gboard is the best for switching between language inputs quickly.
Things which are still going well:
- Syncthing for file transfer between devices
- Text editing in vim + markdown
- Torrenting - did you know you can even get a torrent app on your phone? So convenient. Hypothetically, my favourite use for it would be downloading DRM free copies of digital goods I have already paid for. Or goods that are not available for sale in my country or which are not available anywhere thanks to the rise of streaming services.
Hopes for the future:
- Switching this blog’s SSG over to Eleventy and overhauling the design
- Working on my online fridge poetry game
- Raspberry Pi for an onsite media backup + torrent seeding + other fun
I find coding and tinkering on the computer super fulfilling, but because it’s so frictionless it can become a time sink if I’m not careful. I need to think about how to incorporate it into my daily and weekly routine.
